Review: Nacho Lip Balm

May 25, 2016 Derek Sotak

Chances are that if you are a nacho fan over the years you have encountered this here gag gift, either online or perhaps in person, from renowned Seattle based novelty merchant Archie McPhee. It’s lip balm. Nacho flavored lip balm. Forget Burt’s Bees or whatever other kind of name brand lip balms there are out there, because I certainly did, along with my mind when I decided to put this on my actual lips.

Review: Hooters

May 15, 2016 Derek Sotak

Chicken, Cheese, Guacamole, Lettuce, Pico de Gallo, Jalapeños, Sour Cream, Zesty Chipotle Sauce

“Every normal man must be tempted, at times,” quotes journalist H.L. Mencken, “to spit on his hands, hoist the black flag, and begin slitting throats.” While that may have been true when he wrote it in 1919 the world being a much more wild and lawless place, we are a much classier and more respectable a people in this modern age. Perhaps today’s equivalent would be “Every normal nacho reviewer must be tempted, at times, to sigh with disappointment in themselves, invite a friend with you so you don’t come off as a total creep, and go review the nachos at Hooters.” That might just apply to nacho reviewers going to Hooters with a pile of preconceptions though. You be the judge.

RECIPES FROM THE NACHONOMICON: A NACHO COOKBOOK KICKSTARTER

May 5, 2016 Nachonomics

I, like I'm sure you, have been eating nachos for years, and I, like I'm sure you, love them something fierce. However, my love for them was such that four years ago I started the website Nachonomics in order to spread the good word about the tastiest of foods. Now, a website is all well and good, but what happens when your love of nachos is greater than what can be contained on the internet? Say, you love them so much you have to constantly eat them, for example? You know you can't EAT the internet, but you still want nachos, a LOT of different kinds of nachos. If only there was some way that you could learn how to make a bunch of different kinds of nachos that you could eat!

Enter Recipes from the Nachonomicon, a pocket sized cookbook of all the finest types of nachos from throughout the ages, all now easily available at your fingertips.

  • READ... The History of the Nachonomicon and how it became the blueprint for all the nachos you know and love today!
  • LEARN... How to cook the finest examples of each member of the nacho family from "Artisanal" to "Single Serving." (There's no general type of nacho that begins with "Z" so that's as good as it gets alphabet wise, and I wouldn't want to trick you into thinking there was a type of called "ZBBQ Nachos" or something.)
  • KNOW... The joy that comes of making you, or a loved one, a delicious meal of nachos that will both satiate your hunger and allow you to know the true satisfaction of being able to provide the sustenance to keep a human being alive.
  • TASTE... Nachos, and lots of them, once you make them of course.

While our first book, The Field Guide to Nachos, was all about the history of nachos, and our second, Nachos & You, was about living your life the nacho way, Recipes from the Nachonomicon is perhaps the most useful in the kitchen as it is chockablock with nacho recipes for you to sample. You would be shocked at how many people in this day and age still think that nachos are just chips and some crummy cheese sauce, but with this book you'll be able to teach them a thing or two about nachos. Because this book is full of nacho recipes that you could teach them that aren't just chips and crummy cheese, and displayed in a format to instruct you in how to cook them, you know, like the way a cookbook works. Would both Julia Child and Guy Fieri be proud? I would like to think yes.

RECIPES FROM THE NACHONOMICON is funding now through June 5th. Get in on the ground floor and help us sell out by buying in! Back this bad boy here!

NACHONOMICS: YEAR FOUR

May 5, 2016 Nachonomics

As Cinco de Mayo rolls around again, maybe you should spend a second thinking about what it means to you. If you only care about pounding some quesadillas and chimichangas while guzzling down a trough of margarita, perhaps you need to check yourself before you wreck yourself. Wreck yourself on the shores of casual racism that is.

Did you know that Cinco de Mayo celebrates the victory of the outmatched and under equipped Mexican army over the much larger and better armed French as the battle of Puebla on May 5th 1865? In what might not have been a strategic victory, but was certainly a symbolic one, it proved that Mexico had the power to come together and unite against a much larger foe, and probably prevented the French from gaining a foothold from where it could help the Confederacy during the Civil War. It was also the last time a country in the Americas had ever been invaded by a European power. Plus it was lead by General Ignacio Zaragoza. That’s right, General Nacho himself saved the day, all so you could enjoy some nachos today instead of some Escargots de Bourgogne.

Now I’m not saying you shouldn’t enjoy Cinco de Mayo, and incidentally the 4th anniversary of the launch of Nachonomics, but maybe while you are enjoying your nachos tonight remember not just nacho creator Ignacio Anaya, but also General Ignacio Zaragoza as well. Unless you want some Escargots, in which case maybe you need to head over to France where you can celebrate “Mai Cinquième” or whatever. Bastille day maybe? I don’t know.

5/5/16: RECIPES FROM THE NACHONOMICON

April 25, 2016 Nachonomics

As another Cinco de Mayo rolls around, so does another book in the complete collection of all nacho knowledge, in this case the FINAL book, RECIPES FROM THE NACHONOMICON. With this final volume all the nacho knowledge that there is fit to print will have been done so, there is nothing left for you to learn in the field of nachos. I full expect nacho websites to spring up by the dozen to reflect this influx of knowledge.

As we are not yet ready to reveal the book itself (you have to save something for the wedding night, in this case May 5th, 2016) allow us to instead tease the sweet Recipes from the Nachonomicon World Tour shirt you can get with the book, leading to much speculation as what a few of the recipes you can expect to find inside might be.

Tune in right here on May 5th to find out!
