NACHONOMICS: YEAR FOUR

May 5, 2016 Nachonomics

As Cinco de Mayo rolls around again, maybe you should spend a second thinking about what it means to you. If you only care about pounding some quesadillas and chimichangas while guzzling down a trough of margarita, perhaps you need to check yourself before you wreck yourself. Wreck yourself on the shores of casual racism that is.

Did you know that Cinco de Mayo celebrates the victory of the outmatched and under equipped Mexican army over the much larger and better armed French as the battle of Puebla on May 5th 1865? In what might not have been a strategic victory, but was certainly a symbolic one, it proved that Mexico had the power to come together and unite against a much larger foe, and probably prevented the French from gaining a foothold from where it could help the Confederacy during the Civil War. It was also the last time a country in the Americas had ever been invaded by a European power. Plus it was lead by General Ignacio Zaragoza. That’s right, General Nacho himself saved the day, all so you could enjoy some nachos today instead of some Escargots de Bourgogne.

Now I’m not saying you shouldn’t enjoy Cinco de Mayo, and incidentally the 4th anniversary of the launch of Nachonomics, but maybe while you are enjoying your nachos tonight remember not just nacho creator Ignacio Anaya, but also General Ignacio Zaragoza as well. Unless you want some Escargots, in which case maybe you need to head over to France where you can celebrate “Mai Cinquième” or whatever. Bastille day maybe? I don’t know.

5/5/16: RECIPES FROM THE NACHONOMICON

April 25, 2016 Nachonomics

As another Cinco de Mayo rolls around, so does another book in the complete collection of all nacho knowledge, in this case the FINAL book, RECIPES FROM THE NACHONOMICON. With this final volume all the nacho knowledge that there is fit to print will have been done so, there is nothing left for you to learn in the field of nachos. I full expect nacho websites to spring up by the dozen to reflect this influx of knowledge.

As we are not yet ready to reveal the book itself (you have to save something for the wedding night, in this case May 5th, 2016) allow us to instead tease the sweet Recipes from the Nachonomicon World Tour shirt you can get with the book, leading to much speculation as what a few of the recipes you can expect to find inside might be.

Tune in right here on May 5th to find out!

Review: Late July Chips

April 15, 2016 Derek Sotak

Recently I was making my weekly sojourn to the grocery store in order to find (A) food to eat for the week, and (B) to try and find the three new flavors of M&M’s so I can vote as to out of Honey Nut, Coffee Nut, and Chili Nut (You know my vote is for Chili) which is the best. Sadly I did not find any new M&M flavors, but I did notice some snazzy new chips that caught my eye with their come-hither-ness and was drawn to them. While I might not have found any Honey, Coffee, or Chili, I instead came home with Nacho Chipotle, Jalapeno Lime, and Bacon Habanero.

Cazu Marzu: The Most Dangerous Cheese on the Planet

April 5, 2016 Derek Sotak

It’s known as The Cheese that Crawls, The Maggot Mater, The Most Dangerous Cheese on the Planet, an unpronounceable series of consonants and vowels not meant to be spoken by the human tongue, or simply as Casu Marzu. Imagine if you will a cheese crawling with maggots. This may be easy to do depending on the state of the cheese drawer in your refrigerator, but now imagine that said maggot filled chunk of cheese is actually what you’re looking for to eat and not to throw immediately in your garbage. Not only that, but that this wormy mobile chunk of cheese is a delicacy sought after the world over for who knows what reason. I sit down with fellow Nachonomics contributor Dex Gormenghast to discuss this Mal Caseus with him.

Review: Red Rock Grill & Bar

Tri color tortilla chips, jack cheese, bacon scramble, sour cream, salsa fresca, chili

Tri color tortilla chips, jack cheese, bacon scramble, sour cream, salsa fresca, chili

Typically I don’t like to go out to eat for breakfast or brunch. Why you ask? Because I have never in my life been to a restaurant where I can get nachos for breakfast. Or a breakfast nacho. Or any kind of nacho related thing served during the breakfast or brunch hours. When I start a review with a statement like that you can guess where this is going, that being the Red Rock Grill and Bar for some menu named “Breakfast Nachos”.
