SM.jpg

Finally, the duo covers a movie J.R. is excited to see: "Saint Maud," the critically acclaimed 2019 film which is in the genre J.R. loves: psychologically unstable person with grand plans spiraling toward doom. But count on ole' Derek to spoil the party with his naysaying. Have a listen, and stay for the bickering about movie length!

Episode 221 - Night Tide (1961)

August 11, 2021 Nachonomics
NIGHT TIDE.jpg

Ride the calming seas with us as we discuss the quaint 1961 fantasy-horror movie "Night Tide," where a young Dennis Hopper stars as a sailor in love with someone who is either a murderous mermaid, or just a poor girl abducted from her Greek island. It's arguably not a horror movie, unless you consider the horror of what turned this innocent Dennis Hopper into the drug-snorting maniac we all knew him to be.

Cryptical messages only from JR this week, so I guess another classic episode. If your fondness for Lovecraftian-themes like forbidden cults and secret Gods renders you particularly tolerant and forgiving check out Spider Labyrinth.

Razorback_quad_UK-1.jpg

No news on JR this week, mostly because "The Man" won't let me get within 1000 feet of him. Did you know that the "R" in "JR" is for "Razorback"? It's cannon now, but that doesn't mean you can't enjoy this episode, which we sure did.

As things with JR take a turn for the worse, things with you can take a turn for the better by watching this underseen horror gem! Or you can watch the music video for Pitch Black Manor’s Into the Gears that uses most of its footage! The choice is yours!

As JR continues his long recovery, we look back on Clive Barker’s masterpiece, Rawhead Rex. As Clive said: “They got it all completely wrong. I whined at them a little bit and they said ‘get out of our face’.”

Episode 217 - What's Lost in an Adaptation?

May 26, 2021 Nachonomics

What’s lost in an adaptation of a horror story? The gang ponders if atmosphere can be more than just a low drone, if great works will ever be adapted well. and why more people don’t go back to the original work. Also, 217 episodes in, JR finally reads The Willows.

Episode 216 - John Carpenter, Master of Horror?

Master of horror, or master of making movies that are almost good? You may want to get that madness out of there for you to get in that mouth, but we put on those special glasses and take a critical view of him. We break down his 18 films and decide where we think he falls between a Starman and a 5 star man.

Whatever it is, the way you tell your story online can make all the difference.

More movies we are actually interested in watching! We give Hulu some attention by streaming Sputnik (2020), which has been called Russian "Alien" but is more like Russian "Lilo and Stitch"; and Amulet (2020), which is . . . well, where to begin with that one . . . . Come and have a listen!

Bionic Bigfoot.jpg

The Bigfoot. The Sasquatch. The Skunk Ape. It goes by many names, but why isn’t it in more horror films? The boys tell those dusty mummies, rotten Frankensteins, and goofy Loch Ness Monsters to go home and examine the quintessential American monster. They don’t call him the Wild Man of the Woods for nothing!

Episode 211 - Weird West 2, Part 2

Brimstone.jpg

The duo discuss two westerns where the level of "weirdness" is ambiguous and debatable: the 2016 bleakfest "Brimstone" and the 1973 Clint Eastwood picture "High Plains Drifter." One thing that isn't ambiguous: there is some surprisingly heinous stuff going on in these movies.

It's a double-feature to the Weird West as we discuss Shudder's newest fiasco "The Pale Door," which was "presented" by Joe Lansdale (read: he cashed a check); and the classy if slow "The Wind," which features mind-rending wind demons . . .OR DOES IT!

Nachonomics: ('na-cho-'na-miks)

noun. The branch of knowledge concerned with the production, consumption, and distribution of nachos.

Book: Complete Nacho Knowledge Book: Complete Nacho Knowledge
Book: Complete Nacho Knowledge
$20.00

A copy of "The Field Guide to Nachos", "Nachos & You", and "Recipes from the Nachonomicon". This is literally and literately all the nacho knowledge you will ever require.

The Field Guide to Nachos, a pocket sized reference to the history, types, and background of the greatest of Mexican delicacies.

  • READ... The true story of how Ignacio Anaya created "The Nacho" in 1943.

  • LEARN... How nachos moved from Mexico and spread across America like shredded cheese melting across a pile of chips.

  • KNOW... the real difference between natural cheese versus pasteurized processed cheese product. It's terrifying.

  • DIFFERENTIATE... between kinds of popular nachos that are to be found in our modern restaurants.

Nachos & You, a pocket sized manual on, well, living your life the nacho way.

  • READ... The "true" story of how Gentleman Frank Liberto (Not to be confused with the upstanding Frank Liberto of Rico's or the Frank Liberto of Martin Luther King Jr. assassination infamy) created "The Nacho" in 1976. I say "true" because it is an obvious satire and parody.

  • LEARN... To pickle your own jalapenos for varying degrees of “fun” and “profit”, but more importantly bragging rights on being more artisinal than your friends.

  • KNOW... The science of creating nachos with circular chips as opposed to triangular chips and when to use each so as to not cause embarrassing cultural faux pas.

  • EXPERIENCE... The terror of “Nacho Fingers”, and the joy of curing yourself of them to avoid being ostracized by the community at large.

Recipes from the Nachonomicon, a pocket sized cookbook of all the finest types of nachos from throughout the ages, all now easily available at your fingertips.

  • READ... The History of the Nachonomicon and how it became the blueprint for all the nachos you know and love today!

  • LEARN... How to cook the finest examples of each member of the nacho family from "Artisanal" to "Single Serving." (There's no general type of nacho that begins with "Z" so that's as good as it gets alphabet wise, and I wouldn't want to trick you into thinking there was a type of called "ZBBQ Nachos" or something.)

  • KNOW... The joy that comes of making you, or a loved one, a delicious meal of nachos that will both satiate your hunger and allow you to know the true satisfaction of being able to provide the sustenance to keep a human being alive.

  • TASTE... Nachos, and lots of them, once you make them of course.

With these three books, you can feel secure in the knowledge that you'll be able to give a T.E.D. talk on every single aspect of nachos. Probably closer to three T.E.D. talks as a matter of fact! Do they even let you do that? I don't know, but with nacho knowledge like yours you will undoubtedly be the first!
